Fun Wedding Ideas to Add a Touch of Whimsy

Want to add a touch of whimsy to your wedding day? Here’s a roundup of our favorite fun wedding ideas from real weddings right here at 48 Fields in Northern Virginia. Follow these ideas to surprise and delight your guests from ceremony to sendoff!

FUN WEDDING IDEAS FOR YOUR CEREMONY

When we think of fun wedding ideas, we don’t always think of the ceremony. But you can set a playful tone for your day by adding some whimsy right from the start!

HIRE RING SECURITY

Start your day with a laugh! At Katherine and Joe’s fall wedding, their ring bearer came down the aisle in style. He drove a tiny sports car and carried a briefcase labeled “Ring Security.” The smallest members of your wedding party are sure to bring joy to your guests, so consider how you can add fun to their role in your big day!

MAKE YOUR CEREMONY MORE FUN WITH SIGNS

Keep things playful at your wedding ceremony by asking members of your wedding party to hold up signs at key moments. This made for a fun and memorable addition to Shannon and Taylor’s spring wedding!

END YOUR CEREMONY WITH A BANG

At the end of their ceremony, Brittany and Jason invited their guests to throw streamers as they walked back up the aisle! The idea was a nod to their alma mater, James Madison University, where fans throw streamers at football games.

We’ve also seen couples do leaf tosses and petal tosses. We even had a couple who had an American flag unfurl as they had their first kiss! So how can you end your ceremony with a bang?

If you like this, you’ll love the other personal touches throughout Brittany and Jason’s playful dusty blue and gold summer wedding! See it here.

FUN WEDDING IDEAS FOR YOUR COCKTAIL HOUR

Cocktail hour is your chance to play. During this unstructured time between the ceremony and reception is a perfect opportunity to pull out some yard games or try one of the slightly more unusual ideas below!

BRING SOME UNEXPECTED GUESTS

Your guests will love the opportunity for a photo op with some well dressed alpacas, like at Christina and Chris’ fall wedding! Is there something you love that you want to incorporate into your wedding day? Don’t be afraid to think outside the box!

HAVE A MOBILE BAR

There’s just something about sidling up to a trailer to order your drinks that makes cocktail hour feel like a special occasion! This mobile bar at Nancy and Tom’s fall wedding was fully decked in autumn flowers to match the rest of their florals.

Maybe a trailer isn’t your style, but how about a bar attached to a bike or cart? When it comes to playful bars, the options are limitless!

INCLUDE YOUR FURRY FRIENDS

Angela and Andrew love their two pups, Finch and Harper. In fact, their furry companions walked down the aisle at their ceremony in a bow tie and floral collar!

But even if your pets can’t join you in person on your wedding day, think about how you can bring them with you. For instance, when it came time for drinks, Finch and Harper made an appearance on the couple’s signature cocktail menu!

FUN WEDDING IDEAS FOR YOUR RECEPTION

Keep the fun going all night long with these whimsical wedding reception ideas!

MAKE IT HEART-SHAPED

Even ordinary food like pizza feels celebratory when it’s in the shape of a heart! Consider ways you could make your wedding food more festive, like Maria and Michael did at their fall wedding.

HAVE A FUN & COLORFUL WEDDING CAKE

White wedding cakes are beautiful, but have you considered green? Get a cake your guests will remember, like Rachel and Justin did with this two-tiered beauty!

TREAT YOUR GUESTS WITH A DESSERT TRUCK

Everybody loves a food truck! Amanda and Dustin hired local favorite Captain Cookie to surprise their guests with decadent treats at the end of the night. See more of their classic summer wedding here!

And what could be better than cookies? Donuts! Heather and Grant ended their wedding day on a sweet note with a surprise donut truck for all to enjoy!

LEAVE YOUR WEDDING IN STYLE

How will you leave your wedding? Will you wander out to your car or hitch a ride with a sober friend? How about something a little more stylish? Take inspiration from Carly and TJ, who made a grand exit at the end of their wedding day in this classic car!

We hope this list inspires you to add a touch of fun to your wedding day! Happy wedding planning!
