Expecting rainy weather on your wedding day? Whether you believe it’s an Irish blessing or a major bummer, it’s best to be prepared. Here are our top tips for preparing for rain on your wedding day, along with some of our favorite rainy wedding day photos from real weddings here at 48 Fields!
TALK TO YOUR VENUE ABOUT INDOOR AND COVERED OPTIONS
If your wedding is at a rainy time of year (which can be any time of year in Northern Virginia!) make sure your venue offers an indoor or covered option. We not only offer a rain plan, but many couples choose to get married in the bright and character-filled lower level of our dairy barn so they don’t have to worry about the weather.
PREPARE YOUR GUESTS
If any part of your wedding will be outside, particularly in grassy areas, consider warning your guests ahead of time. A quick heads up on your wedding website will save many guests from sunken heels or muddy feet.
Make sure to provide cover for any outdoor festivities. Our umbrella barrel tables, part of our complimentary Something Borrowed decor collection, are perfect for keeping guests dry if an unexpected, quick storm passes through during a cocktail hour that was planned to be outside (like in the sunny-but-raining photo above).
FIND PHOTOGENIC RAIN GEAR
When taking photos in the rain, you might as well enjoy it! We love clear umbrellas for stunning night-time rain photos. You could also choose umbrellas that coordinate with your wedding colors or even feature your favorite superheroes! Umbrellas and rain boots can be a playful addition to your wedding photos, so don’t be afraid to get creative.
TOUCH BASE WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Rainy weather will likely affect the photos you can take. Talk to your photographer in advance and make sure they are familiar with your venue and can suggest alternate photo spots and ideas.
FIND PHOTO INSPIRATION
This is where rainy wedding planning gets fun. Look up fun or romantic rainy wedding photo ideas like the ones throughout this article. Once you’ve found some that you like, share them with your photographer to make sure you get the shots you want. For double the inspiration, ask your photographer to do the same!
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE SKIES
Ask your photographer to watch the sky so you can sneak away for an incredible photo like the one above from Amanda and Dustin’s wedding, which was taken without camera flash during a moment of heat lightning!
ENJOY YOUR DAY!
It may not be exactly what you planned, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be magical. When the day arrives, it’s time to let go of perfection and just enjoy. And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for rainbows!
We hope this list helps you lean into planning a joyful rainy wedding and enjoying your day, rain or shine!
